Why choose an oral surgeon?

What is oral surgery?

A surgical procedure of the head, neck, face, jaws, or hard and soft tissues of the mouth is collectively known as oral surgery. An oral surgeon is an expert of the head, mouth, jaws, and neck, having completed years of education and training beyond dental school to understand the delicate structure and aesthetics of the facial area.

An oral surgeon can perform many different surgical procedures of the head, neck, face, and jaws. Examples include:

The difference between dentists and oral surgeons

The scope of education and training an oral surgeon completes goes far beyond dental school. In general, an oral surgeon will earn a dentistry degree and then complete a hospital-based oral surgery residency program for an additional four years, becoming trained in emergency medicine, general surgery, anesthesia, and more.

Dr. Jerman is the only board-certified oral surgeon in the Flathead Valley. Board certification is the distinction that an oral and maxillofacial surgeon has passed intensive application and examination processes that demonstrate the doctor's knowledge and experience required to practice in the specialty.

Board certification is required to operate in a hospital setting. As a board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Jerman treats medically compromised patients in the hospital and performs procedures that are more complex and extensive in nature. In addition, he takes calls at both Kalispell Regional Medical Center (KRMC) and North Valley Hospital, treating patients with dental and facial injuries.
